| Pipers ________________________________________ |

The members of our Local 1823 take great pride in the Fire Service and the deep traditions that occompany it. One such
tradition is that of the bag pipe. In the 1800s, during the Great Immigration period, hundreds of Irish, Scottish, Welsh and
others of Celtic origin settled into growing urban areas. In order to support their families, many were forced to take one of
the most dangerous jobs of the time - firefighting. With them they brought the customs of their heritage, which is reflected
in our profession as we know it now.
Several members of Local 1823 have expressed interest in learning the bagpipes, with our most accomplished
pipers being FF/Paramedic Eric Beverly and FF/Paramedic Brian Williams. Eric and Brian began playing in 2002 and since have become very
well-known in our community for their abilities. They are routinely invited to perform at local weddings, funerals, and
parties, with the highlight of their travels thus far coming when they marched in the 2005 "Sea of Blue" at the
National Fallen Firefighter's Memorial (Emmitsburg, MD).
Firefighter's Williams and Beverly currently participate in a pipe band local to the Miami Valley area known as the "Plug
Uglies". Brothers or Sisters wanting to learn about the band and its events can email Brian or Eric, or contact the Local 1823
for more information.
